First Nations Food Story - Breville

Gaawaa Miyay X Breville commercial collaboration, part of the Aboriginal Culinary Journey - a project three years in the making and a range which celebrates country, food story, relationships, regenerative practice + narratives of place through design and tools for the everyday. A collaborative project with Breville Australia and Senior Pintupi artists Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, Yukultji (Nolia) Napangati and Yalti Napangati, along with Yuwaalaraay designer Lucy Simpson, Curated by Walbanga and Wadi Widi woman Alison Page.

Lucy’s work ‘Dhunbarrbil’ (place of many seeds ready for grinding) features on the toaster, and depicts Australian kangaroo grass (buunhu) - honouring the many stories which are connected through native Australian grasses and grains. It speaks of the seasons, of balance, and of sustainability, and the importance of working together. It is a celebration of the beauty of diversity and the strength of the oldest living and continuing culture on the planet. Dhuuyaay (firestick) design / story applied to the Toaster oven speaks of cultural fire / fire stick farming and the care and management of the land across Australia historically + the continuing importance of regenerative practices connected to traditional ecological knowledge systems and native food sources.

As part of the project, Breville has committed to donate 100% of the profits from the sales of the range to First Nations programs. Half of the funds will be used to support the National Indigenous Culinary Institute's work to create employment opportunities for aspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander chefs and the 'Indi-Kindi Program' by the Moriarty Foundation which supports childhood nutrition and the sharing of Indigenous Food Culture. The other half will be used for Indigenous scholarships and initiatives at the University of Technology Sydney to create pathways for employment in engineering, technology and design.

In addition to artwork and concept design of Toaster and Toaster Oven, Lucy also worked with Breville and Design United* on packaging, photography and graphic design connected to the promotion and branding of the range.
